In Issue #7, We Feature Wilco

Released on 9 March 1999, Summerteeth is the third studio album widely regarded as a pivotal turning point for the band, marking their definitive departure from the “alt-country” label of their earlier work toward a lush, experimental orchestral pop and power pop. The record is famous for the stark contrast between its bright, “Technicolor” melodies and its dark, often disturbing lyrics. Inspired by 20th-century literature and Tweedy’s personal struggles. Tracklist: 1 “Can’t Stand It” – Open with bright chimes, keyboards, and a massive psychedelic chorus. Features upbeat music masking dark lyrics. 2 “She’s a Jar” – A gorgeous, melancholic chamber-pop piece featuring a soft flute and a haunting harmonica solo. It concludes with a chilling lyric pointing to relational discord. 3 “A Shot in the Arm” – An absolute standout track built on heavily strummed acoustic guitars, driving piano, and escalating, drug-referencing anxiety. 4 “We’re Just Friends” – A soulful, pop-infused ballad demonstrating Jay Bennett’s organ fills and harmony vocal structures. 5 “I’m Always in Love” – Pure power-pop perfection. A straight-up indie banger with buzzing analogue synthesizer runs clashing against a driving rhythm section. 6 “Nothing’severgonnastandinmyway (again)” – Upbeat, radio-friendly guitar-pop with highly apparent 1960s pop hooks. 7 “Pieholden Suite” – A warm, multi-part arrangement using horns and experimental studio textures reminiscent of classic Brian Wilson. 8 “How to Fight Loneliness” – A stark, beautifully downcast acoustic number. Critiques hollow self-help advice with the haunting line, “Just smile all the time”. 9 “Via Chicago” The tormented masterpiece of the record. Tweedy delivers a slow, world-weary murder ballad disrupted by dynamic bursts of avant-garde noise and drum-kit chaos. 10 “ELT” (Everybody Leaves Theirs) – The closest the album gets to traditional, twangy alt-country. Features jangly guitars. 11 “My Darling”. A tender, unambiguous lullaby dedicated to Tweedy’s young son, using a lush arrangement. 12 “When You Wake Up Feeling Old” – A lovely, bittersweet acoustic tune exploring domesticity and the passage of time. 13 “Summerteeth” – The upbeat title track that utilizes a catchy melody to explore a surreal narrative context. 14 “In a Future Age” – The official, slow-burning closer that points toward the minimalist, experimental textures they would perfect on their next record, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot.

Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, released in 2002 to massive critical acclaim—the album masterfully blends traditional alt-country/pop structures with avant-garde noise, static, and sonic deconstruction. Tracklist: 1. I Am Trying to Break Your Heart – Droning keyboards, unpredictable percussion, and acoustic strums. A staggering opener. Cryptic lyrics capture the self-destructive disorientation of heartbreak. 2 Kamera – Driving, grounded rock driven by clear guitars and subtle xylophone/cowbell textures. Provides a melodic, rhythmic contrast to the opener. 3. Radio Cure – Distorted static effects, strained vocals, and a slow, dirge-like progression. from deeply melancholic to.fractured beauty by the end. 4. War on War – An upbeat, driving tempo fighting through layers of heavy distortion and electronic noise. 5. Jesus, Etc. – Lush, weeping string sections, warm basslines, and smooth, comforting vocals. The emotional centrepiece. It serves as a soothing balm of hope and human reassurance. 6. Ashes of American Flags – A sorrowful, slow-burning ballad that gradually unravels into waves of ambient noise and distortion. A poignant critique of consumerism and a hollowed-out American dream.. 7. Heavy Metal Drummer – A bright, nostalgic pop-rock track celebrating youth, summer, and playing music. A joyful intermission, pure, uncomplicated indie-pop bliss. 8. I’m the Man Who Loves You – Jerky acoustic patterns punctured by a jagged, aggressive electric guitar solo. A chaotic, affectionate love song that subverts standard romantic declarations. 9. Pot Kettle Black – Shifting tonalities, driving alternative-rock energy, and self-reflective lyricism. Focuses on hypocrisy and reclaiming self-respect. 10. Poor Places – Atmospheric tension that slowly swells into a massive, wall-of-sound drone. Features a hypnotic shortwave radio transmission sample repeating the phonetic words “Yankee… Hotel… Foxtrot,” giving the record its name and conceptual climax. 11. Reservations – A quiet, seven-minute ambient ballad that gently fades into static and silence. A fragile yet optimistic conclusion. It leaves the listener with a feeling that despite the world’s static and chaos, love provides a path forward.

The 13th studio album stands out in their extensive discography as it marks the first time since 2007 that they hired an outside producer, handing the reins to Welsh avant-pop experimentalist Cate Le Bon. This collaboration pushed Wilco back into more experimental and “art-pop” territory, Jeff Tweedy explores isolation, ageing anxieties, emotional exhaustion, and fragile relationships. Tracklist:.1. Infinite Surprise – Opens the album with an uneasy, beautiful cloud of percussive noise. An avant-garde opener featuring uneasy textures, and a slow-building transition from chugging atmosphere into a fragile ballad. 2. Ten Dead -Acts as a dark, brooding meditation on mass shootings. A downbeat ballad contrasted by clanging guitars. 3. Levee – An off-kilter, gentle shuffle exploring relationship strain and the numbing effects of medication/depression. 4. Evicted – An amiable, acoustic-driven track reminiscent of their prior country-rock era (Cruel Country), dealing with heartache and taking responsibility for a breakup. 5. Sunlight Ends- A sparse, atmospheric piece capturing the elusive nature of attraction and emotional weariness. 6. A Bowl and a Pudding – Features icy detachment and sparse instrumentation. 7. Cousin – the new-wave title track offers a charged, woozy rock exploring a sense of isolation. 8. Pittsburgh – A delicate, finger-picked acoustic tune centred on self-doubt and deepening despair. 9. Soldier Child – A vibrant, power-pop inclusion that injects a brief sense of reunion joy and rhythmic warmth into the tracklist. 10. Meant to Be – A galloping, Beatles-esque closer that trades heavy anxiety for a final pop hook, earnest longing, and hard-won hope..

Wilco is an American rock band based in Chicago. The band was formed in 1994 by the remaining members of alternative country group Uncle Tupelo after singer Jay Farrar’s departure. Wilco’s lineup changed frequently during its first decade, with only singer Jeff Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt remaining from the original incarnation. Since early 2004 the lineup has been unchanged, consisting of Tweedy, Stirratt, guitarist Nels Cline, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, keyboard player Mikael Jorgensen, and drummer Glenn Kotche. Wilco has released thirteen studio albums, a live double album, and four collaborations: three with Billy Bragg and one with the Minus 5. The band moved from the alternative country style on its debut album A.M. (1995), but has since introduced more experimental aspects to their music, including elements of alternative rock and classic pop to a current “eclectic indie rock collective that touches on many eras and genres” Shortly after the release of the album, multi-instrumentalist Jay Bennett joined the band, providing the band with a keyboardist and another guitarist. During the two hundred-date tour supporting A.M., Tweedy began to write songs for a second album. The lyrical theme of the songs reflected a relationship between musical artist and a listener. Being There (1996) was well received by critics from several major media outlets.
In November 1997, Wilco entered Willie Nelson’s recording studio in Spicewood, Texas to record a third studio album Summerteeth (1997). The album was lyrically inspired by the marital problems of Tweedy and his wife, as well as by twentieth-century literature. Tweedy relied heavily on Bennett to provide music for the singer’s “bold, but depressing” lyrics. The album featured a lot of overdubbing Stirratt and Coomer were concerned with the production, since it reduced their involvement in the music. The album sold only 200,000 copies, significantly less than Being There despite critical acclaim. The making of the 2002 album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot proved to be a turning point, with the band transforming a series of disappointments into a triumphant release.Coomer had been ousted during the recording sessions (he was replaced by drummer Glenn Kotche), and Bennett was fired soon after the album was finished in what was an acrimonious breakup. Soon after completing its fifth studio album, A Ghost Is Born (2004; Grammy Award winner for best alternative music album), the band was immersed in more turmoil. Tweedy checked himself into a rehab clinic for a longtime addiction to painkillers. The volatile lineup was shuffled again, with keyboardist Leroy Bach departing and guitarist Nels Cline and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone joining Tweedy, Stirratt, Kotche, and Mikael Jorgensen to create a sextet.

This would prove to be the band’s longest-lived incarnation. The unusual period of stability was characterized by widening success as a touring act and steady record sales for the gently introspective Sky Blue Sky (2007) and the career-spanning compendium Wilco (The Album), released in 2009. In January 2011 the band announced that it was leaving Nonesuch to form its own label, dBpm Records. Wilco’s first album for the label, The Whole Love (2011), opened with an adventurous seven-minute sound collage and closed with a 12-minute meditation. In between were more concise examples of Tweedy’s songwriting range, from Beatles-inspired chamber pop to autumnal folk, highlighting the band’s increasingly accomplished interplay. In 2015 Wilco unexpectedly released Star Wars, making it available for free on the band’s website. The concise album won praise for its experimentalism and songcraft and captured the spirit of Wilco’s live performances. Schmilco (2016) was largely acoustic, quiet, and personal. In 2017 Wilco went on hiatus. In 2019 Wilco released its 11th studio album, Ode to Joy. The stripped-down recording was widely praised. The band returned to its roots with the understated Cruel Country (2022), a double album of country-infused songs, many of which address issues in the United States. In 2023 Wilco released Cousin, which was produced by Welsh indie singer-songwriter Cate Le Bon..
